My brother was quiet on the line. It was around eleven at night back in Jersey, and it sounded like he was sleeping when I called. “Ana, you have to slow down. I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.

“I’ve been seeing someone from that place I was working at, and Paul and I are probably breaking up. I don’t want anyone in our family but you to know.”

I lost it. I sobbed uncontrollably. I told him that I had to call him back. He made me promise that I would call him first thing in the morning.
